Art

I love birds.
Believe it or not, my whole business grew from drawing birds for my kid’s room. I used cheap oil pastels on textured card stock and brown paper grocery bags to make some colorful, curious bird art for my new baby boy’s corner of our second bedroom. I kept drawing after he was born, using any shred of time I could find, because I felt like it helped me hold on to a part of myself while I tried to figure out how to be a mom.
I discovered colored pencils a little later, and fell in love with the medium. It’s slow and meditative, and I love the process of layering colors to create depth and detail. I use a variety of pencil brands, but my favorites are Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran D’ache Luminance. I draw on either hot-pressed watercolor paper or Clairfontaine Pastelmat, a sanded surface designed for pastels.
I want my work to inspire people to choose wonder: to look more closely at the natural world, appreciate how beautiful and magical it is, and remember that we are a part of it. Some of my more recent drawings include native plants on which the bird relies for food or cover, as I’ve learned so much over the years about the interconnectedness of insects, native plants and birds (not to mention other animals, including us). I’m focused on my local Mid-Atlantic region for now, but hope to expand my range of subjects as I travel and learn more.
